Quoted in Men's Health piece: "The Five Worst Things on Fast Food Menus Right Now" with Keri Gans and Vandana Sheth

Quotes include:
  • “Usually when people eat fast food, it’s 1,000 to 1,300 calories per meal,” says Angel Planells, R.D.N., C.D. “If your one meal is taking more than half your caloric allowance, you’ll overeat.”
  • “It’s like you took something that would be healthy and threw caution to the wind with all of these extra toppings,” says Planells.

Chimed in on an article in Today's Geriatric Medicine titled "Nutrition for Arterial Health" written by Judith Thalheimer, with contributions from David Becker, Alice Lichtenstein, and Rena Zelig

Quotes include:
  • "The USDA has done an excellent job of taking all of the latest research and making it accessible to the public using MyPlate," says Angel Planells, MS, RDN, CD, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • Ensuring seniors living in the community make healthy food choices presents a bigger challenge. Planells recommends referral to a registered dietitian (RD) when possible. "RDs have knowledge, resources, and the experience to help guide behavior change," Planells says. "Unfortunately, access to a dietitian for older adults in the community is very rare. Insurance coverage really varies. Medicare covers medical nutrition therapy only for diabetes and chronic kidney disease, so a lot of the basic nutrition education falls to the primary care providers."
  • "Activity trails off as we age," Planells says. "I advocate going for a walk or gardening or doing house work, anything that gets the heart rate up a little bit. If they have pain, a stationary bike or swimming pool are good choices. Ten minutes of activity here or there can easily get people to the recommended minimum 30 minutes a day."
  • "Change is hard for everybody," Planells says, "and older adults have years of habits to break. But it's never too late. We want to work toward the highest possible quality of life at every age."

Whole Foods Magazine: News to Nutritionists

Whole Foods Magazine: News to Nutritionists

I had the pleasure of contributing to an article on food trends after attending the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics annual Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo (FNCE) with fellow media spokespersons Toby Smithson, Lori Zanini, and Alissa Rumsey

Some quotes from the article include:
  • Angel Planells MS, RDN, CD explained that taking foods that are considered “sweet” and making them with a savory twist is an excellent way to increase consumption.
  • “Research is emerging to help people optimize their gut health and FODMAPS appears to be the new “it” trend”, said Planells.
  • “I really enjoyed the virtual reality booth at the Food & Nutrition Magazine exhibit.  I was able to take an almond farm tour!  This could be the future for many educational offerings such as virtual attendance at FNCE, farms, or factories,” said Planells.Nutrition is and will continue to be an emerging science. “Many consumers feel paralyzed by the daily nutrition and health pieces that demonize food and/or nutrients,” said Planells. “One day fat is the enemy and the next we are not eating enough fat. Click-bait nutrition articles sometimes stretch nutrition into an art and science especially when it comes to weight management with “detoxes,” “cleanses” or any other “it” topic. Also everyone who eats claims to be an expert! If Joe B or Susie Q has lost weight trying the XYZ diet, clearly everyone can do the same.” The best thing to do is to consult certified nutrition and diet experts and valid organizations such as the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for up-to-the-minute information revealed at events like FNCE.
